Ice Cream Gone Retro

by Katie Cook

Walking through the doors of Cole Valley’s Ice Cream Bar automatically transports you back in time. The small shop features a variety of home made ice cream treats, lunch-time eats, and fine adult beverages that will make you feel like a kid again. The owners purchased the all-original 1930s-era soda fountain on eBay and shipped from its previous home in Michigan. The soda fountain enhances the classic vibe, but the star of the Ice Cream Bar is the most definitely the food.

When I was there we had the black bean torta and the grilled cheese. Everything from the bread to the ham on the grilled cheese is made fresh and in-house. The quality ingredients carry over into the soda fountain where the soda jerks use tinctures to flavor soda water and create inventive alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Grab a stool at the soda fountain and take advantage of the last days of Indian Summer and the perfect weather for ice cream.
