Museum Happy Hours

by Katie Cook

These happy hours are a great break from the standard happy hour at the local bar and they also make for a fun date night activity. Many museums and galleries in San Francisco feature monthly or weekly events for their adult patrons. Below are three of the more popular happy hours.

NightLife at the California Academy of Sciences

This is a hip happy hour and mixer for the 21 and up crowd. There are several cash bars located throughout the museum, DJs, and special interactive activities based on the theme of the week. There is plenty to keep you entertained, so you’ll want to get there early to spend as much time as possible at the museum. This event is popular with young professionals. The natural sciences have never been sexier.

Every Thursday night 6-10pm, Admission $12.

Exploratorium After Dark

Every first Thursday of the month the Exploratorium turns into a playground for inquisitive adults. The Exploratorium’s After Dark event is open to those 18 and older and features several cash bars for the 21 and up crowd. Each month has a new theme and features unique hands-on activities and special exhibits. For an extra $7 you can challenge your senses while you try to maneuver through the Tactile Dome in complete darkness.

First Thursday of the month (6-10pm), Admission $15. For $30 you can buy an After Dark members pass that allows admission to all of the After Dark events for an entire year.

Friday Nights at the DeYoung

This family friendly event is held every Friday in the lobby of the DeYoung museum. Each Friday night is organized around a different theme and the special events vary based on the theme. Some of the activities that the museum offers include musical entertainment, a craft bar for the kids (and adults), and a cash bar. The event is free, but museum admission is not included. Since the mixer is held in the lobby, this museum happy hour lacks the entertainment that can be found at the Academy of Sciences or the Exploratorium events. This is a great event if you are looking for a quiet Friday night activity or a mellow date night.

Runs every Friday night from 6-10pm. The Friday night event takes a break for the holidays and will resume on Friday, March 30, 2012.
